Photographing the future… (competition)

Do you know what wishes look like?  Could you turn your hopes into pictures?
What image could you create of the Derby you would like to see in 2026?

Derby City Partnership has teamed up with the Derby Telegraph and Quad to ask Derby’s amateur photographers to let their imaginations run riot and create photographs that represent their 3 wishes for Derby in 15 years time.

The photographic competition is part of Derby City Partnership’s wider public consultation asking people who live and work in or visit Derby to give them their 3 wishes for the future; one for yourself, one for your neighbourhood and one for Derby in 2026.

“It is important that we get as many wishes as possible and for some people it is easier for them to tell us in pictures rather than words, so we are really hoping that this photo competition will appeal to those people”, said Hazel Lymbery, Director of Derby City Partnership.  “I hope it inspires the wealth of creative amateur talent we have in Derby and, just to make sure people can get really creative, the images can be digitally enhanced or manipulated to give an imaginative impression of the future.”

Victoria Wilcox, Picture Editor at Derby Telegraph, added; “I am really looking forward to seeing how people interpret their 3 wishes.  We want the photos to really capture what people’s hopes and aspirations are for the future.  It might be something you want to preserve or to change, or it could be a comparison with somewhere else in the world.  While it does not have to be photographs of Derby itself, the pictures must have Derby’s future at their heart.  So they could be landscapes, people, buildings or activities – I am hoping people’s imaginations are ignited by this and creativity is definitely encouraged!”

The reason for asking people for their wishes is so that they can be used to influence the creation of one single vision for Derby in 2026.  This will then be shared as widely as possible across the city so everyone knows where Derby is going and everyone can think about what they can do to help Derby get there.

Adam Buss, Deputy Director of Quad, said “If you look at the last 15 years there have been lots of changes that have made a huge difference to what we want from our lives and our surroundings.  The chance to express what the next 15 years might bring photographically is really exciting.  I am intrigued to see how people will interpret their own wishes and delighted to have been asked to be part of the judging process.”

The competition is open only to people who live, work or visit Derby and will be split into two age categories: Under 16 years and over 16 years.  Entrants under the age of 16 years need to have written parent or guardian consent to enter submitted with their entry.

People taking part can submit up to three photos per entry, one per wish.  These can be in colour or black and white.  Your entry must be your own original work.

There will be one winner and 2 highly commended places for each age category.  The prize for the winner of each age category will be £100 of Cathedral Quarter or Westfield vouchers.  Each highly commended entry will receive a certificate.

Each entry must be marked with your name, address, age, contact telephone number (both daytime and evening) and where the photo was taken, plus 50-100 words telling them about the wishes that the photograph(s) seek to express.

Entries should be emailed to craig@derbycitypartnership.co.uk.  Hard copies will not be accepted.  The subject box of the e-mail must state ‘3 wishes for Derby photographic competition’

The competition will close at 5pm on Friday 30 July 2010.
